It's Summertime! Lessons are over and you don't know what to do continue your learning process while leaning on the sand? Here are some good tips on how to keep up with French during holidays.

Take a rest and enjoy it!

It is always good to give your brain and body a break. Holidays were meant for this, right? So keep calm and do not open any manual for a month or so. While you focus your attention on something else than memorizing new words and expressions or learning you conjugation, your brain will have some time to process (almost) everything that you studied in the previous weeks and months. It will work on storing it in a good place and put everything into perspective.

But something useful that you could do to consolidate your efforts is learning other ways. Here are some ideas on how to keep up with French during holidays through other activities.

Watch French movies...

There are plenty of movies you can watch from A1 level, because the story is easy to follow, and the characters speak standard French. Along the way, you will learn new expressions and become familiar with words that French people use all the time. It is also very interesting to listen to the tone people use in daily situations.

Here are some movies you could try (with my advice on the minimum level required):

or series

Nowadays, you can also find some nice French series on platforms, such as Lupin, 10 pour cent / Call my agent, or Le bureau des légendes. And of course, you can also watch any of your favorite series in French with subtitles in French. I recommend Versailles on Netflix.

Read a French book

They are plenty of contemporary French authors that you can read from A2-B1 level on. Find here some titles you could give a try:

  • Central Park, Guillaume Musso
  • La vérité sur l'affaire Harry Quebert, Joël Dickers
  • No et moi, Delphine de Vigan
  • La liste de mes envies, Grégoire Delacourt
  • La première gorgée de bière, Philippe Delerm
  • Noa, Marc Levy

Surf the internet

There are also useful websites to read news in French. But I particularly recommend https://apprendre.tv5monde.com/ , a complete gem! It allows you to find articles on many topics, from social debates to news, sorted by level of language (A1, A2, B1, B2...) and plenty of activities linked to these articles. There are thousands of interesting activities to find there!

If you just completed the A1 level, I also recommend a website I created a couple of years ago, which was designed for A1 level students planning to live in France https://onsinstalleenfrance.weebly.com/ It is full of information on France and french people. You will find there vocabulary lists, online fun activities and short grammar point summaries.

If you're looking for fun videos to review you conjugation or some grammar points, you can go to https://learnfrenchwithalexa.com/. She also has a Youtube channel. Same for https://parlez-vous-french.com/ , d'Anne. She also has a Youtube channel with videos.
