About the CEFRL

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL), is an international norm created to define language abilities and detail the learning progress. It is now used all over the world and allows us to harmonize the teaching and the competences in all languages.

The CEFRL has defined 6 levels of language mastering

Levels A1 and A2 - Elementary user

Levels B1 and B2 - Intermediate user

Levels C1 and C2 - Experienced user

The CEFRL guides the teachers in their teaching goals and allows them to make their students work on the 4 key competences (writing understanding, oral understanding, writing expression and oral expression) in a communication perspective. It also guides the students who are able to locate themselves clearly in the learning process. Click under to see a graphic explanation of the different levels and what you’ll learn along the way.

Plan your learning

Now that you know more about the different levels, the next question is: when will I get to the next level?

This will rely on different factors, such as:

• learning path: once a day is much more efficient than once a week

• motivation: the more you’re having fun while learning, the quicker you progress

• teacher: getting a good teacher/school you can trust and you feel good with, is also important.

• personal abilities: for some people, learning another language will come more easily.

• mother tongue: some languages such as Italian or Spanish are closer to French than, let say, Japanese or Arabic.
